Challenges to Adults in Higher Education

Adults face many obstacles when planning to enter higher education. Some of the obstacles may be low incomes or poverty, low self esteem, lack of skills needed for college, and motivation. According to Merriam (2006), collaborative programming provides services for adults by preparing them to enter higher education. Collaborative programming in rural communities is imperative. Services such as tutoring, counseling, academic counseling; financial aid and budgeting seminars, and health screenings are available. However, in rural communities where individuals lask transportation these obstacles can be more of a challenge. My question is how do you reach those individuals, the individuals that need these services and lack the resources to obtain them.

  1. Many students today do not know the first step in going into higher education and are not in a position financially to explore options. Some in rural areas may not have the internet to research options for college. Outreach into these communities may be the answer. Whether it be a formal setting or even informal, colleges could go to these rural areas and have some type of town hall to explain the options to these students.

  2. In our area there are community college sites. Students can go to the sites and take ICN classes and have access to a computer lab. The one they they do not recieve is tutoring services. Students would have to make the trip to the actual community college site for that service. I think this is where there is a problem. Not all students are able to make the trip. A solution could be to have an individual at a site that will offer services to students possibly by appointment.
